Call it fair trade, call it ethical sourcing, call it socially responsible
free trade; we simply call it the way we do business.
Since becoming the very first all-organic coffee roaster in 1992, Jim, our
green coffee buyer (among other things) has always placed the quality of the
coffee that we purchase as our number one priority. Our belief has always been
that if you take care of the quality that we buy and sell, everything else will
fall into place.
We are a 100% organic roaster (meaning all we do here is organic coffee), and
the very nature of the organic business is a more direct relationship with growers;
a sustainable business model – recognizing that farmers need the capitol
to continue to use organic practices and do so to produce quality, and a paper
trail to abide by these practices. There is an unquestionably good deal of trust
involved in the above statement, but this is why we spend a great deal of time
on verification.
Verification is completed using due diligence in order to determine that the
farmers and the workers on the farms are being treated fairly and given fair
wages. This due diligence includes but is not limited to: visiting farms, interviewing
those who have visited farms, and exchanging correspondence and photos with
suppliers and farmer groups. From this information we are able to determine
that, in fact, the companies we are dealing with are as supportive of the process
and economics as we are.
In terms of certifications, as we continue to place quality as our number one
factor in coffee purchasing, we do not abide by any one certification. We do
use Transfair certified coffees, we do use Rainforest certified coffees. We
are also working much closer with Utz Certified and have, in fact, made a commitment
to urge some of the farms that we have long been working with to go with Utz
certification. The reason that we like Utz Certified is that their certification
places more emphasis on the importance of the health and welfare of the workers
as opposed to what price is paid for coffee that may or may not affect the daily
lives of the farm workers.

If one were just to look at the prices paid for top quality organic coffee,
the reality is that the good stuff is WAY ABOVE what ‘fair trade’
minimums require.
In addition to the above, we have taken it upon ourselves to support specific
projects at coffee origins. The most meaningful and grandiose of these is our
library in Atitlan, Guatemala. See “Jim’s Library Project”
page for details.
We also support numerous other causes and choose to do these ‘under the
radar’. Rather than tooting our own horn for every ten cents per pound
more we pay or every can we recycle, we choose to go about our business in a
way that matches our values and we hope these are aligned with yours. Especially
because no matter how valiant a cause is, it is no fun to support if the coffee
doesn’t meet your high quality standard.
